Before you read this note, please start with Part I and then Part II so it hangs together and makes sense.
Part III
  • Squeezes and other risks
  • Market positioning
  • Bet correlation
  • Crap trades, timeouts and monthly limits

Squeezes and other risks

We are going to cover three common risks that traders face: events; squeezes, asymmetric bets.

Events

Economic releases can cause large short-term volatility. The most famous is Non Farm Payrolls, which is the most widely watched measure of US employment levels and affects the price of many instruments. On an NFP announcement currencies like EURUSD might jump (or drop) 100 pips no problem.
This is fine and there are trading strategies that one may employ around this but the key thing is to be aware of these releases. You can find economic calendars all over the internet - including on this site - and you need only check if there are any major releases each day or week.
For example, if you are trading off some intraday chart and scalping a few pips here and there it would be highly sensible to go into a known data release flat as it is pure coin-toss and not the reason for your trading. It only takes five minutes each day to plan for the day ahead so do not get caught out by this. Many retail traders get stopped out on such events when price volatility is at its peak.

Squeezes

Short squeezes bring a lot of danger and perhaps some opportunity.
The story of VW and Porsche is the best short squeeze ever. Throughout these articles we've used FX examples wherever possible but in this one instance the concept (which is also highly relevant in FX) is best illustrated with an historical lesson from a different asset class.
A short squeeze is when a participant ends up in a short position they are forced to cover. Especially when the rest of the market knows that this participant can be bullied into stopping out at terrible levels, provided the market can briefly drive the price into their pain zone.

There's a reason for the car, don't worry
Hedge funds had been shorting VW stock. However the amount of VW stock available to buy in the open market was actually quite limited. The local government owned a chunk and Porsche itself had bought and locked away around 30%. Neither of these would sell to the hedge-funds so a good amount of the stock was un-buyable at any price.
If you sell or short a stock you must be prepared to buy it back to go flat at some point.
To cut a long story short, Porsche bought a lot of call options on VW stock. These options gave them the right to purchase VW stock from banks at slightly above market price.
Eventually the banks who had sold these options realised there was no VW stock to go out and buy since the German government wouldn’t sell its allocation and Porsche wouldn’t either. If Porsche called in the options the banks were in trouble.
Porsche called in the options which forced the shorts to buy stock - at whatever price they could get it.
The price squeezed higher as those that were short got massively squeezed and stopped out. For one brief moment in 2008, VW was the world’s most valuable company. Shorts were burned hard.

Incredible event
Porsche apparently made $11.5 billion on the trade. The BBC described Porsche as “a hedge fund with a carmaker attached.”
If this all seems exotic then know that the same thing happens in FX all the time. If everyone in the market is talking about a key level in EURUSD being 1.2050 then you can bet the market will try to push through 1.2050 just to take out any short stops at that level. Whether it then rallies higher or fails and trades back lower is a different matter entirely.
This brings us on to the matter of crowded trades. We will look at positioning in more detail in the next section. Crowded trades are dangerous for PNL. If everyone believes EURUSD is going down and has already sold EURUSD then you run the risk of a short squeeze.
For additional selling to take place you need a very good reason for people to add to their position whereas a move in the other direction could force mass buying to cover their shorts.
A trading mentor when I worked at the investment bank once advised me:
Always think about which move would cause the maximum people the maximum pain. That move is precisely what you should be watching out for at all times.

Asymmetric losses

Also known as picking up pennies in front of a steamroller. This risk has caught out many a retail trader. Sometimes it is referred to as a "negative skew" strategy.
Ideally what you are looking for is asymmetric risk trade set-ups: that is where the downside is clearly defined and smaller than the upside. What you want to avoid is the opposite.
A famous example of this going wrong was the Swiss National Bank de-peg in 2012.
The Swiss National Bank had said they would defend the price of EURCHF so that it did not go below 1.2. Many people believed it could never go below 1.2 due to this. Many retail traders therefore opted for a strategy that some describe as ‘picking up pennies in front of a steam-roller’.
They would would buy EURCHF above the peg level and hope for a tiny rally of several pips before selling them back and keep doing this repeatedly. Often they were highly leveraged at 100:1 so that they could amplify the profit of the tiny 5-10 pip rally.
Then this happened.

Something that changed FX markets forever
The SNB suddenly did the unthinkable. They stopped defending the price. CHF jumped and so EURCHF (the number of CHF per 1 EUR) dropped to new lows very fast. Clearly, this trade had horrific risk : reward asymmetry: you risked 30% to make 0.05%.
Other strategies like naively selling options have the same result. You win a small amount of money each day and then spectacularly blow up at some point down the line.

Market positioning

We have talked about short squeezes. But how do you know what the market position is? And should you care?
Let’s start with the first. You should definitely care.
Let’s imagine the entire market is exceptionally long EURUSD and positioning reaches extreme levels. This makes EURUSD very vulnerable.
To keep the price going higher EURUSD needs to attract fresh buy orders. If everyone is already long and has no room to add, what can incentivise people to keep buying? The news flow might be good. They may believe EURUSD goes higher. But they have already bought and have their maximum position on.
On the flip side, if there’s an unexpected event and EURUSD gaps lower you will have the entire market trying to exit the position at the same time. Like a herd of cows running through a single doorway. Messy.
We are going to look at this in more detail in a later chapter, where we discuss ‘carry’ trades. For now this TRYJPY chart might provide some idea of what a rush to the exits of a crowded position looks like.

A carry trade position clear-out in action
Knowing if the market is currently at extreme levels of long or short can therefore be helpful.
The CFTC makes available a weekly report, which details the overall positions of speculative traders “Non Commercial Traders” in some of the major futures products. This includes futures tied to deliverable FX pairs such as EURUSD as well as products such as gold. The report is called “CFTC Commitments of Traders” ("COT").
This is a great benchmark. It is far more representative of the overall market than the proprietary ones offered by retail brokers as it covers a far larger cross-section of the institutional market.
Generally market participants will not pay a lot of attention to commercial hedgers, which are also detailed in the report. This data is worth tracking but these folks are simply hedging real-world transactions rather than speculating so their activity is far less revealing and far more noisy.
You can find the data online for free and download it directly here.

Raw format is kinda hard to work with

However, many websites will chart this for you free of charge and you may find it more convenient to look at it that way. Just google “CFTC positioning charts”.

But you can easily get visualisations
You can visually spot extreme positioning. It is extremely powerful.
Bear in mind the reports come out Friday afternoon US time and the report is a snapshot up to the prior Tuesday. That means it is a lagged report - by the time it is released it is a few days out of date. For longer term trades where you hold positions for weeks this is of course still pretty helpful information.
As well as the absolute level (is the speculative market net long or short) you can also use this to pick up on changes in positioning.
For example if bad news comes out how much does the net short increase? If good news comes out, the market may remain net short but how much did they buy back?
A lot of traders ask themselves “Does the market have this trade on?” The positioning data is a good method for answering this. It provides a good finger on the pulse of the wider market sentiment and activity.
For example you might say: “There was lots of noise about the good employment numbers in the US. However, there wasn’t actually a lot of position change on the back of it. Maybe everyone who wants to buy already has. What would happen now if bad news came out?”
In general traders will be wary of entering a crowded position because it will be hard to attract additional buyers or sellers and there could be an aggressive exit.
If you want to enter a trade that is showing extreme levels of positioning you must think carefully about this dynamic.

Bet correlation

Retail traders often drastically underestimate how correlated their bets are.
Through bitter experience, I have learned that a mistake in position correlation is the root of some of the most serious problems in trading. If you have eight highly correlated positions, then you are really trading one position that is eight times as large.
Bruce Kovner of hedge fund, Caxton Associates
For example, if you are trading a bunch of pairs against the USD you will end up with a simply huge USD exposure. A single USD-trigger can ruin all your bets. Your ideal scenario — and it isn’t always possible — would be to have a highly diversified portfolio of bets that do not move in tandem.
Look at this chart. Inverted USD index (DXY) is green. AUDUSD is orange. EURUSD is blue.

Chart from TradingView
So the whole thing is just one big USD trade! If you are long AUDUSD, long EURUSD, and short DXY you have three anti USD bets that are all likely to work or fail together.
The more diversified your portfolio of bets are, the more risk you can take on each.
There’s a really good video, explaining the benefits of diversification from Ray Dalio.
A systematic fund with access to an investable universe of 10,000 instruments has more opportunity to make a better risk-adjusted return than a trader who only focuses on three symbols. Diversification really is the closest thing to a free lunch in finance.
But let’s be pragmatic and realistic. Human retail traders don’t have capacity to run even one hundred bets at a time. More realistic would be an average of 2-3 trades on simultaneously. So what can be done?
For example:
  • You might diversify across time horizons by having a mix of short-term and long-term trades.
  • You might diversify across asset classes - trading some FX but also crypto and equities.
  • You might diversify your trade generation approach so you are not relying on the same indicators or drivers on each trade.
  • You might diversify your exposure to the market regime by having some trades that assume a trend will continue (momentum) and some that assume we will be range-bound (carry).
And so on. Basically you want to scan your portfolio of trades and make sure you are not putting all your eggs in one basket. If some trades underperform others will perform - assuming the bets are not correlated - and that way you can ensure your overall portfolio takes less risk per unit of return.
The key thing is to start thinking about a portfolio of bets and what each new trade offers to your existing portfolio of risk. Will it diversify or amplify a current exposure?

Crap trades, timeouts and monthly limits

One common mistake is to get bored and restless and put on crap trades. This just means trades in which you have low conviction.
It is perfectly fine not to trade. If you feel like you do not understand the market at a particular point, simply choose not to trade.
Flat is a position.
Do not waste your bullets on rubbish trades. Only enter a trade when you have carefully considered it from all angles and feel good about the risk. This will make it far easier to hold onto the trade if it moves against you at any point. You actually believe in it.
Equally, you need to set monthly limits. A standard limit might be a 10% account balance stop per month. At that point you close all your positions immediately and stop trading till next month.

Be strict with yourself and walk away
Let’s assume you started the year with $100k and made 5% in January so enter Feb with $105k balance. Your stop is therefore 10% of $105k or $10.5k . If your account balance dips to $94.5k ($105k-$10.5k) then you stop yourself out and don’t resume trading till March the first.
Having monthly calendar breaks is nice for another reason. Say you made a load of money in January. You don’t want to start February feeling you are up 5% or it is too tempting to avoid trading all month and protect the existing win. Each month and each year should feel like a clean slate and an independent period.
Everyone has trading slumps. It is perfectly normal. It will definitely happen to you at some stage. The trick is to take a break and refocus. Conserve your capital by not trading a lot whilst you are on a losing streak. This period will be much harder for you emotionally and you’ll end up making suboptimal decisions. An enforced break will help you see the bigger picture.
Put in place a process before you start trading and then it’ll be easy to follow and will feel much less emotional. Remember: the market doesn’t care if you win or lose, it is nothing personal.
When your head has cooled and you feel calm you return the next month and begin the task of building back your account balance.

That's a wrap on risk management

Thanks for taking time to read this three-part chapter on risk management. I hope you enjoyed it. Do comment in the replies if you have any questions or feedback.
Remember: the most important part of trading is not making money. It is not losing money. Always start with that principle. I hope these three notes have provided some food for thought on how you might approach risk management and are of practical use to you when trading. Avoiding mistakes is not a sexy tagline but it is an effective and reliable way to improve results.
Next up I will be writing about an exciting topic I think many traders should look at rather differently: news trading. Please follow on here to receive notifications and the broad outline is below.

EUR/USD forecast: Dollar is out of fashion

EUUSD forecast: Dollar is out of fashion

Fundamental U.S. dollar forecast for today

USD shorts are now the most popular Forex trading strategy

The market is driven by emotions. If the EUUSD bulls are taken by the euphoria, no negative economic data will hold them back! The U.S. industrial production data have exceeded the forecasts, the U.S. retail sales are back at the pre-crisis levels. In the euro-area, however, the euro-area employment has dropped the most on record since the series begun in 1995. But the euro buyers are going ahead. Investors are confident that the euro-area economy will recover, and the U.S. growth will face a recession amid the coronavirus pandemic.
BofA Merrill Lynch notes that 36% of asset managers surveyed by the bank said the U.S. dollar sell positions are their favourite trading strategy, the highest in the history of research. This strategy is much ahead of all the others, its proportion increased by 6% from 30% in July, and, most likely, it will continue to gain popularity. BofA Merrill Lynch names, among other reasons, the loss of the greenback's position as a reserve currency. In fact, the countries that are under pressure from the USA are active participants in the process of de-dollarization. The proportion of the US currency in the trade settlements between Russia and China has been for the first time below 50%. In 2015, for example, the dollar’s share in the Russia-China trade settlements was more than 90%.

Dynamics of USD share in China-Russia trade settlements

Source: Wall Street Journal
Washington tries to affect Moscow using sanctions, but it uses much more sophisticated measures concerning Beijing. President Donald Trump ordered ByteDance to divest the U.S. operations of its app TikTok as the social media will cease to work in the USA in 90 days. A U.S. reprieve that had allowed some US companies to work with Huawei without a license now expires. The USA warns that the sanctions will target other China’s corporations, including Alibaba.
The US-China relations are getting tense, the parties even delayed the meeting planned for August 15 to assess the fulfilment of obligations under the trade agreement signed in January. The EUUSD bulls, however, are not concerned about the trade conflict escalation. They expect that amid such a scenario the euro’s share in the global FX reserves will increase. According to 40% of asset managers polled by BofA Merrill Lynch, this process will start already in 2021.
Forex seems to be taken away by euphoria. Hedge funds’ dollar longs versus the world eight major currencies have been in the red for the first time since May 2018. The main reason is said to be speculators’ growing interest in the euro.

Dynamics of speculative dollar positions and Treasury real yields

Source: Bloomberg
Of course, bulls’ enthusiasm used to quickly result in the capitulation in the past. However, under the current conditions, I mean the difficult epidemiological situation in the USA, Fed’s grim projections, and the upcoming presidential election in November, the US stock indexes are growing, and the EUUSD can well grow as well. Amid the current situation, it is important to check buyers’ willingness to continue the rally anyway. If the resistance at 1.188 is broken out, the pair can well continue rising.

The Danger of the Carry Trade

It's noticeable that more and more people in Forex are talking about the so-called Carry Trade or Cary Trade strategy - some know nothing about it, some advice them to use it... I've commented on the matter elsewhere but think it's worth a separate post, thus I do it:
The Carry Trade (Strategy) was very profitable prior to the Financial crisis - I could buy a small new car only on swaps every year from a 20K deposit! Since around 2008/9 it's being squeezed out as the interest rates are gradually reduced globally - this is due to the global economy is cooling down. This alone hit the most all the Currency Hedge Funds... My records show that for example Oanda's combined for all the currencies positive swap dropped 2.5 times in the last three month!!! For you as a novice fx trader the main danger of this carry strategy is that countries with high interest rates will inevitably cut their interest rate rather sooner than later. Thus, for example, if you sell USD/TRY to capitalize on an attractive positive swap it may soon mean for you that you are left with a huge minus generated by your sell-positions and a tiny plus swap (in relation to the minus). And you can't close those sell-positions with profit for god know how long - and imagine some economic turmoil during that time with volatility shooting up 10 times, or a flash crash etc... Buy the way Turkey cut its interest rate in September and brokers cut their positive swaps 2 times in response (!)... Nowadays the Carry Trade has lost its shine for most pro traders as there are other strategies generating superior returns, but for a novice it is useful to learn about it.
P.S. Those currency pairs with the better positive swap are the most volatile.

FX carry strategies (part 2): Hedging | Systemic Risk and Systematic Value

fintech #trading #algotrading #quantitative #quant #fx #forex #hft #financial

FX carry strategies (part 2): Hedging There is often a strong case for hedging FX carry trades against unrelated global market factors. It is usually not difficult to hedge currency positions – at least partly – against global directional risk and against moves in the EURUSD exchange rate. The benefits of these hedges are [1] more idiosyncratic and diversifiable currency trades and, [2] a more realistic assessment of the actual currency-specific subsidy or risk premium implied by carry, by applying hedge costs to the carry measure. Empirical analysis suggests that regression-based hedging improves Sharpe ratios, reduces risk correlation and removes downside skews in the returns of global FX carry strategies. Hedging works well in conjunction with “economically adjusted” FX carry and even benefits the performance of relative FX carry strategies that have no systematic risk correlation to begin with.
This post is based on proprietary research of Macrosynergy LLP and SRSV Ltd. FX car.....

$40 - $1,000 Flip Challenge Update

Quick background for those new here. This started with me saying that if a person gets suitable good at entering the market and finding places to get high RR trades, it is entirely possible to flip small amounts of money into larger ones relatively quickly. To demonstrate this, I said Id flip $40-50 into over $1,000 over a year and link up Myfxbook to track all my trades. I’d also run versions of the strategy with the info posted for people to log into the accounts, see the trades and copy them if they want (see ForexCopy).

The first one I bust on day one. I tried to do it really quickly ($1,000 in a week or so from $40). I got up around 200% - 250% and then zero’d it. The trades I lost in where not really good opportunities, and I as overly aggressive with them. Was dumb.

The second one I tried running via a copy trader, it messed up early trades and vitaly went bust in the opening hours (I do not think it ever went into profit).

The “I can flip $40 to $1,000 as long as I can keep reloading $40s” challenge is far less impressive. So, I have been reloading that account with tiny amounts, trying to get from $2 or so up to a more useful equity figure. I have failed doing this various times, but it has been down to accuracy being less sharp that it may have been rather than this not being viable.

This is viable. It is fucking hard. Don’t get me wrong. Entering the market when you have 5 - 7 pips before you get margin called is tricky. Kinda fun, too. Good training in getting entries. With a couple good entries, though, entirely viable. $2 can get to $5, $5 can get to $15 and that is enough pips at 0.01 to have a damn good cracking at catching some big moves. Realistically, I think it only takes 10 really good trades to have a fairly useful bankroll.

So let’s just write the $40 - $1,000 thing off. I bombed that.

I am willing to up the ante. Rather than $40 - $1,000 over 12 months, I think I can do $2 or $3 to $5,000 in 18 months.

This is contingent upon a couple things;

This may sound outlandish and crazy, but the maths behind this are fairly solid. All it takes is catching a few 50 - 100 pip trades. A few of these can take $2 to $30, a few more and it is over $100. I can get 1:10 - 1:15 risk reward trades, and can increase risk:reward with in-trade management and adding positions (or hedging positions in profit). So using 5 - 10% risk in really prime opportunities, and it does not take many of them in a row to make some decent money compounding an account from $100.

Technical Details on Margin Requirements
You may be wondering how this can even be feasible. It may seem logical that even the best trader in the world could not get started from $2, but actually with the right brokerage conditions and pair selection, this can be done.

I am using IC Markets. I have 1:500 leverage.
Commission per trade is 0.6 of a lot (so, about $0.04-0.06 per trade with my position sizes).
My spreads are usually under a pip. They sometimes go to zero spread.

Pair selection.

NZD and JPY are the lowest margin requirement currencies, and these can trend well. So I focus on these for starting out. I am trading NZDJPY, I require $1.33 margin to open 0.01 lots. So this means if I close all my trades and have under $1.33 I can not open any more trades.
However, my stop out level is 50% of my margin requirements. So I get stopped out when I have $0.65 equity. This gives me about 15 pips from $2. I can also hedge this, and can use ways to manipulate margin requirements to get the most bang for my buck (which can be good or bad, it goes both ways, but it gives me more options).
So with these settings, to take $2 to $10 is not all that hard. Catch 50 pips or so a couple times without the first trade drawing down 10+ pips. With $10, I have 100 pips at 0.01 (or the option of far more creative positioning), I think 100 pips is plenty margin for error to get into a few good trades and get going.

I’ve pinned the Myfxbook for this to start from today (16th January 2019) since this is the first day I am taking this seriously.
https://www.myfxbook.com/members/inweedwetrust/40-1000/2893650

Deposit $1.50 + account balance $0.65 = Slightly over $2 to start.
The net deposit on this account is now around $66.

Update.

I want to quash this idea that the only way someone can make large returns in FX is using reckless risk and gambling. Obviously many people do this ,but some just know ways to get far more reward for their risks.

Here is a trade I am. I had about $3.50 equity when opening the first two trades. 5 pips and 2 pips stops. I was risking about $0.50.

https://preview.redd.it/ljohtjwqdwa21.png?width=1366&format=png&auto=webp&s=24d62c7296c8afdc15907dbe42a18a37f389e1fd
Then as the move has developed, I have adjusted my stops and added to the position. I am targeting 60 pips or so here, about $20 pay off. I have nothing at risk now. I will end the trade really close to breakeven, if not slightly up.

I have turned $0.50 risk into potentially $20 profit, and done this in the space of 10 pips.

**I am not saying this is easy**. It has taken me years of studying price moves to know how, and far more importantly when to do this. I am saying it something that can be learned, and when applied well ... can be surprisingly profitable.

Update.

https://preview.redd.it/1jptz02cfwa21.png?width=1366&format=png&auto=webp&s=a8af8bd06a16058ae2369fe634215116d806fc31
Now I have set hedging orders on an area I know price often pulls back from. If it pulls back to the level I expect, I can exit the hedges and have the buy stops under there. If it then goes higher, I banked an extra X% on the gain with the hedges.
I have set a hedging order above the high for if price blows through the take profits (making me short) and continues upwards. The worse case scenario sees me lose rather little, the best case (price filling take profits and then coming down to make the sells profitable, or the price retracing so the sells are profitable then it making a high) yield substantial profit potential.

Piling up potential profit, without adding on much potential risk.

Update.

https://preview.redd.it/v70pqc9qiwa21.png?width=1362&format=png&auto=webp&s=a252499e2dc4f5ffc782fb6e44ffc5d8b8fb0fa6
Then I use the rules of the Extreme Edge strategy to trail stops. To get my line in the sand. I now have locked in a profti (albeit small) and can potentially make somewhere in the $25 - $30 range or perhaps more from my $0.50 risk.
https://www.reddit.com/Forexnoobs/comments/af15l9/extreme_edge_strategy_detailed/

Update.

This never worked out (I screwed it up). It is a lot harder with $2 on a 1 minute chart whilst posting live updates. However later you will see how I can take these same principles that can make $0.50 risk into $20 and use them to get into positions where $10 risk can be $300. Or where $100 can be several thousand.

Update.
So I was a bit early on that move, but this is what it looks like when it works. Occasions to position like this happen fairly frequently. I can get myself into these positions where I am risking a nominal amount for much larger gains many times in a day. I can take the same principles and apply them to weekly charts and position for "flash crashes", and other volatile moves.
This is obviously on an account with more equity, I got margin called on the small one, will try again tomorrow. I was probably 2 pips away from going to $2 to close to $100 today (assuming the trades come through as I think). Will be abl to check what it could have been. If I'd hit the first trade, it would have mirrored the trades in the account that is copying my account *2 risk. If these swings hit, this account may make about $50 in them. Which will put it up about 100% (trading only 2x 0.01 at any time) since we fixed the margin/FIFO copying issues. Bit early to be counting chickens, but we'll see. https://www.myfxbook.com/members/drcherrypoppemt4-9084923/2910254

Our most recent AMA with Terence Tan the Head of Business Development and Helen Astaniou Chief Marketing officer discussing TIO Markets: the next-generation of FX trading.

Our most recent AMA with Terence Tan the Head of Business Development and Helen Astaniou Chief Marketing officer discussing TIO Markets: the next-generation of FX trading.

TIO Markets: the next-generation of FX trading.
Q : If TIOMarkets is the first company to offer FX trading using crypto, why don't we switch the domain to dot com (.com) instead of dot uk (.uk) ?A >> We are switching to dot com (.com). The website is still in progress. What you see now is not the website that we are going to be launching with. So, don't worry about that.

Q : What is the symbiosis between the tradeio and TIOMarkets?A >> The biggest thing that I want to mention is the Liquidity Pool. Although there's different companies, and there's different entities, the registrations are completely different. Even the platforms are different between TIOMarkets and tradeio. However, what happens is as TIOMarkets gets bigger and stronger, and there's more volume, there are more clients. People are trading and the company is making money, the profit from that is going to go back into Liquidity Pool. Anybody on trade.io Liquidity Pool is going to start benefit in a big way when they start seeing that daily income get bigger and bigger. So, I would say that it’s probably the biggest symbiosis there.
Q : Tell a little bit about TIOMarkets and how we are planning to make it really big.A >> For TIOMarkets, we have been preparing for the launch for a long time and we really want to make this something very different. We have come up with innovative packages and innovative methods that appeal to traders. Without letting too much of the cat out of the bag, I just want to say that we have actually come up with certain subscription packages that really allow traders to experience some very innovative features and benefits.
Not only that, whatever that we are pushing out to our trading community, allows you to be able to trade with really low commissions. Commissions can be as low as 0 per standard lot. And spreads will be very low as well. And not only that, we are pushing out some really very innovative features.
We have actually talked to some traders about the features and they loved it. For example, one of the features is that it actually allows you to be able to (what I call), " add an undo" button for your trade. So, just imagine this scenario, imagine that you are actually trading and within the first 60 minutes of you executing your trade, if the market actually goes against you, if you actually took up insurance for the trade (for just a very small insurance premium), you will actually have the ability to undo your trade. And whatever floating losses you had will be reimbursed back to you.
Not only that, we believe that traders should be given a chance. Even if they make mistakes. So, just imagine this, within the first month of you trading with us (TIOMarkets), you somehow experience a margin call, or you lose what you put in, what we will do is that we will actually reimburse 50% of your first time deposit back for you to trade again. Why we do this is because we want to make it a point for our traders to have a second chance. We believe that everybody deserves a second chance to be able to learn as they go along. These are just some of the innovative benefits that we have come up with.

Q : How is the 10K users target going to be attained, apart from the 3 months free?A >> We are going to start on 2nd of April. We have 6 big pre-registration campaigns and each of those campaigns have a slightly different message, tone and they are going to be targeted to slightly different people target groups. So the idea is, whatever attracts you the most is the thing that helps you to click. So we've got a wide range of messaging, channels and platforms that we're using to get the message out and we are really going to go as big as we can to try and get the numbers in. We really believe that the numbers will be big for a lot of reasons.
And just to add to the previous question about what makes us different, some of here at the trade.io office have FX background. Like myself, we have been involved in FX before. We know the industry, we know what talks and what doesn't talk, we know what works and what doesn't work. We have seen that there is a lot of fatigue in the FX industry. The people are sick and tired of attempting to trade, and for various reasons (maybe that trade is not getting through, etc). Any reasons that makes it frustrating for the trader, when they just want to trade FX. And we are coming in here from this angle. We know the industry, we know what's possible and what not possible from a brokerage perspective. We are going to try to completely overcome any of those issues. Our solution to that problem is essentially the subscription package.
Here's the theory, that you are trading and where your usual FX brokerage is taking out their commission (maybe they are paying commissions for IB, maybe they are widening the spread, maybe they are taking money from here to try and meet their other target they've got). We are saying that none of that. We are not taking anything out. Our subscription package is very transparent. It is once per month at a fixed cost, you know what exactly that cost is and it is at very good price. And thereafter, your trading is essentially free. This will be really cheap and there will be big savings to be made.
This isn't anywhere else in the FX industry at the moment. It will be completely unique to us and it will be something that is extremely attractive to season traders. And for the millennials or the aspiring traders (who don't know how to trade yet), it will be appealing as well because we are saying we know what the issues are, we know what the problems are in FX. If you trade with us, thing are clear, things are clean. We'll support and educate you and you will have a much better overall experience.
That’s our positioning. Aside from that, we've got the FCA Regulation, which is absolutely huge. I'm just personally speaking having worked for a couple of FX companies in the past that didn't have the FCA Regulation, it was always something that clients keeps asking for. So that is one that is really significant for us.
**Terence adding in to Helen's explanation >> Coming from the viewpoint of a lot of us have in the FX industry, one way or another, we really want to come from the angle where we want to be able to create a perfect trading environment for traders. At this point of time we are putting the focal point on our traders creating an environment which is great from them in terms of trading and not like other brokers out there where the emphasis is mainly on profit. Whatever we do such as the subscription packages and the other innovative features that we have are all from the view of a trader.

Q : What makes us stand out from the competitors?
A >> Its going to be our subscription package that isn't available anywhere else. Secondly would be the TIO reimburse (that's what Terence talked about before).Next would be the TIO Shield. That is our fancy name for the really cool feature whereby if you trade on a specific currency pair and if it all goes wrong, you will get your money back (essentially minus a small premium). These are the 3 big points that differentiates us aside from the other stuffs I've said about our tone and angle.
Q : Should we expect TIOMarkets to be fully operational on the 9th of April?
A >> We are opening the doors for pre-registration on the 2nd of April. We've got a little surprise campaign coming out a little earlier than that. That's all I'll say about that for now but then there are 10,000. We don't know exactly when that will be. We believe that it will be sooner rather than later. Even so, one week wouldn't be long enough, so give us a couple of weeks and then we will fully open the doors and let you know when that will be.
Q : The profit for trade.io will just come from the subscription and not from the spreads?
A >> It comes from both, actually. The profit from the company comes firstly from the subscription packages. And then secondly, we are going to be offering what I am calling an "ala carte" option which is maybe you don’t want to pay monthly, that's fine. You can just trade on-the-go as you go. And the spreads will be a little wider but we're going to be fully transparent and honest about that. So, it's your choice which you prefer to trade.
** Additional point from Helen >> It is going to be green (beginner) user friendly and we're creating some pretty cool educational packages. Pretty much everything we're doing, we are saying right. What is different to what we've done before, what is different to how the others are doing it. How can we make it more interesting, less jargony and more fun. Thus it will be definitely friendlier to new users.
Q : Who is our liquidity provider?
A >> that is way out of the marketing remit perhaps. We (Helen and Terence) are unable to answer that.
Q : What is our plan to get partners onboard?
A >> We actually have a very big plan in terms of having joint venture partners and affiliate onboarding because we believe affiliates are going to play a very big part of our whole entire strategy. So we actually have plans that will be launched in Phases.
We'll be paying our joint venture partner and affiliates CPA commissions. Those of you who are in the industry will be familiar with that its Cost Per Acquisitions(CPA). So depending of the numbers of traders or clients that you refer to us and which country they are from you will be paid one time CPA commission. This is kind of controversial in the sense of we don't pay out IB commission because what is mentioned earlier, we basically want to create a great trading environment for traders and probably those of you who know that when IB commissions were paid it has to come from somewhere and very often is comes from the traders. So in our case we are just paying one time CPA commission. Later on down the road, we will launch other hybrid commission program as well. In terms of the CPA commission we'll also allow our partners to be able to have sub-affiliates as well down to about 2 tiers. In other words, not only you will be able to refer traders but you will actually be able to refer sub-affiliate as well.
Not only that, previously like Helen mentioned we actually have a lot of different funnel which we coming out with and those funnel will be made available to our affiliate as well so we'll be testing those funnels and we'll let you know whichever funnel that works, we'll provide you with the emails plus we provides you with the banners and landing pages. So all you have to do as an affiliates is to mail to our databases or however you're going to drive the traffic to your landing pages and after that the company will take over to help you convert those leads into actual clients for you.
It is really exciting in term of the partners. We are giving all the resources they need, we are making the resources as attractive as possible, to make it easiest as possible for them to make lots of money. That will help us a lot. And just as at the partnership side, we've got an exciting addition to the team over here. We've got a new Head of partnership that started with us today in fact and she is a bit of a of a big deal in FX. She has got some of the incredible contacts and networks so that we can really hit the ground when it comes to the partnership.
Q : When is our website is going to live?A >> Firstly, we are going to have what we called landing pages go live on the 2nd. They are individual pages not connected to a bigger website specifically and their purpose is specifically to lead generate. So there we will be going live. For the actual website is as you all know is a big project and a work in progress so that’s going to come a bit later.
Q : How are we going to differentiate ourselves?
A >> I've seen it three or four times now on the chat they are very worried about how we are going to differentiate ourselves. We will! You can trust that we'll because as I said we've been there and we've done that. We've been in FX before. Many of us we don’t want to be like the other brokers. We going to be different not only our offerings and our products but in the way that we express those things. From the tone to the visuals to the actual offerings. It's going to be a breath of fresh air in all aspects apart from the actual platform we're using which is a very well-known very popular platform and of course the instruments are going to be popular instruments that will also be offered by the brokers we can't differentiate there, we don't want to. So, you'll see.
Q : Will hedging be available and what is the maximum leverage available ?A >> Yes and the maximum leverage 1:500
Q : Is there any plans to collaborate with another full bright firm like another Forex firm or other to boost our trade volume?
A >> No plans to partner with another FX at this stage to boost our trading volume.

Investment strategy

Hi guys, what do you think about this investment strategy:
Rrsp: - 50-60% US ETFs (unhedged), USD holding because of withholding tax. Within this most highly investing in mid cap S&P EWI, also some S&P 500 cap weighted, maybe a small cap fund as well? - 15-20% bonds (idk which ones, probably Can bonds to reduce forex risk) - 10-20% CAN stocks - 10-20% international stocks (non US/can), buying the CAN fund which holds them to avoid double withholding tax situation if I buy a can fund which holds a US fund which holds the international equities.
For taxable account: -swap based ETFs? -CAN stocks because of dividend tax credit?
Rebalancing strategy: won’t rebalance
For future purchases of US equity I will try to find out how to efficiently hedge those. I won’t move any current funds from unhedged to hedged after purchasing unhedged, I guess
The main weaknesses are high fx exposure and high volatility, but I’m just starting so I figure if I hold these investments for a long time and never sell I’ll be ok.

Post Brexit Profit Analysis

I am a big believer in the concept that one of the best (maybe the best but it is subjective) ways to make money money in the markets comes down to patience and well timed aggression.
There are some extreme golden opportunities in the markets and to a trained eye they are often very easy to spot and relatively easy to trade.
The tricky bit is not losing during all the other times haha.
Patience ... well timed aggression.
I have been quite stagnant in my trading for a few weeks and then as the Brexit was due, got extremely active and we got the best trades of my FX life (in terms of how quickly the results came, we have had swing trades achieve similar results over 6 months or so).
We done far better than I expected but I had always been saying that the opportunity comes AFTER the Brexit, the market will mis price some things and as it happens, some things strongly broke SR levels.
So... now it is game time.
Not only on the Pound although it is in focus but in general this volatility jump presents multiple opportunities.
I will keep a running commentary on some of the analysis I have, moves I am looking to make and where I feel the money is to be made here if you'd like to follow along.
Things to take note of;
1 - Not all my trades win, I am rarely over 70% accurate over a longish time period.
2 - My strategies are risk:reward based and expected to be profitable on risk:reward basis.
3 - Money management used is a set percentage basis, so on every trade the same amount of risk is used, lot sizes are adjusted based on the number of pips in stop loss . http://www.myfxbook.com/forex-calculators/position-size helps with this.
4 - Correlation risk is real! If I am for example selling GBPUSD, GBPJPY, GBPAUD and GBPNZD, to risk 2% on each trade is really more like a 8% risk .
This should be considered and to use 0.5% risk in each trade here would be shroud, rather than 2% in each. http://www.myfxbook.com/forex-market/correlation
5 - Any thing I post is for educational purposes only, I am not telling you to trade anything in the markets, any trades you take are exclusively at your own risk and you should do you own analysis and due diligence.
6 - I am not your, or anyone's financial adviser. I hold no qualification for this, I am just a guy on the internet.
7 - The strategies and tactics I use are ones I have used for a long time and found them to be successful but there is absolutely no assurance they will be profitable in the future.
8 - At times there will perhaps be a portfolio approach or sympathetic hedging approach used.
Lets say for example. I am short on GBPUSD with a 300 pips stop and 600 pips target from a larger chart and the Pound is rallying against this position, I may start to look for short term momentum buys on GBPJPY,
Let's say the GU hits 300 pips stop and GY wins 50 pips for a 50 pips stop, because of the money management method used, the GY trade has covered the GU risk.
9 - If you can not afford the pips, you can not take the trade.
We are in volatile times and some stops will have to be several 100 pips and even at that be somewhat tight, if losing the trade on the smallest lot size you can trade would exceed an acceptable level of risk, do not trade.
10 - Don't think I have a 10 but we got to 9 and it's good to finish on a round number.
Analysis will be posted in comments.
